Instructions for Visa Applicants

What All Visa Applicants Need to Present

• Current passport, which will remain valid for at least six months after planned entry into the United States.
• All prior passports.
• Visa application form (DS-156). If you are male, 16-45 years of age, supplemental visa application form (DS-157).
• Proof of social, family, economic, professional ties to home country.
• Recent photograph, 2 inches square (50 mm square), B&W or color, front facing ( for more information click here.)
• Nonrefundable visa application fee of $100.00 or Kwacha equivalent.

Additional Documents For Student Visas

• Valid Form I-20.
• Evidence of sufficient funds to cover first year’s studies.
• Evidence from sponsor noting ability to be a sponsor.
• Supplemental visa application form (DS-157)
• Contact information and work history form (DS-158). Please note under item 6, the word "siblings" means "brothers and sisters."

How To Obtain An Appointment With The Consul

Applicants should call the Consular Section at 1 250-955, between 9:00hrs and 12:00hrs, Monday through Thursday, to schedule an appointment for the interview. Applicants are required to submit fees and application documents one day prior to the scheduled interview date. In case of group applications, only one member or agent is required to bring the passports, application forms, photos and fees to the Embassy. All applicants must appear personally for the interviews.

Picking Up Your Visa

If you are issued a visa, you will be requested to return to the Consular Section the day of your interview at 1500 hours to pick-up your passport with visa. You may send someone on your behalf with your receipt to pick-up your passport.
