Renewing Your U.S. Passport
In order to renew your U.S. passport you will have to complete a passport application form. You should use form DSP-82 (click here) if you were last issued a passport good for 10 years and you can present that passport to us. You must use form DSP-11 (click here) for children (under 16), if your passport was lost or stolen, or if your last passport was not issued for 10 years validity.
In addition to the completed application, you must present proof of your U.S citizenship (your old passport, if you have it), and two 2 x 2 inch photographs of yourself (color or black & white with a clear, light-colored background) taken within the last six months. The normal "Passport" photos taken in Zambia are not large enough, so please ask for photos that are 2 x 2 inches. These photos should give a full face view in which the face takes up at least half the vertical space of the photo. Do not sign the photograph.
The fee for filing form DSP-82 is $55 (or equivalent in Kwacha), the fee for filing form DSP-11 is $55 for adults and $40 for children (under 16). Anyone filing form DSP-11 must pay an additional $30 execution fee.
New law requires the appearance of and signature by both parents for children 14 years of age and under. Alternatively, one parent can appear and sign if the other parent has executed the consent form DS-3053 (click here). The appearing parent should bring both parents' passports.
All passports, except in emergencies, are issued by the National Passport Center in New Hampshire. This process can take two to three weeks. Therefore, please plan accordingly.
You will be able to continue traveling on your old passport during this process.
Please note that the American Embassy offices are closed on holidays.
